Strings Program Shines at Annual Festival of Strings ConcertBy ROB FAULKNER, HWDSB Staff

HWDSB’s Itinerant Strings Program wowed its audience again this year, as the annual Festival of Strings drew together 469 strings students from more than 40 elementary schools as well as orchestra players from Delta and Westdale secondary.

The March 11 concert in the Great Hall at Hamilton Place featured in the second half of the program a massed orchestra of all 469 students conducted by London, Ont.-based Robert Arnold, who has conducted orchestras and officiated at festivals across Canada.Full Story

A large, hairy, and sometimes sleepy guest has been visiting Dr. J. Edgar Davey students at Sanford Avenue School this term, putting a canine twist on the notion of a “reading buddy.”

Lily the Leonberger arrives quietly with owner and retired Lake Avenue elementary teacher Cindy Hunt. Lily is gentle, stately, a rare German breed known as “the European babysitter.”

Olympic Spirit Burns Brightly at A.M. Cunningham, and HWDSBBy ROB FAULKNER, HWDSB Staff

Grade 1 students in Madame Brooks-Bittle’s class were having a debate as they raised their mini-torches and Olympic banners during the Vancouver 2010 kickoff at A.M. Cunningham elementary.

“I really like the fast skating,” Azaria said.

“I like hockey,” said Patrick, an avid player.

“I like the one where you lay on your back and go through tunnels,” said Jacob.

“You know they have a slide just like that at McDonald’s?” said Ella.

It was a big day at th... Full Story

European Sport Building Student-Athlete Skills On, and Off, the IceBy ROB FAULKNER, HWDSB Staff

Billy Green students Taylor Mullen and Michael Ciavarella admit the game is fast, the ball-handling tricky and the learning curve steep in the little-known sport of floorball.

“It’s a lot like hockey,” Ciavarella said inside Saltfleet secondary’s gym yesterday, where Highview won the HWDSB elementary championship in a sport that bills itself as “the world’s most popular indoor hockey.”

Yesterday, Saltfleet’s gym was transformed, with packed bleachers and knee-level sideboards, for th... Full Story

Safe Schools Changes Take Effect Today By ROB FAULKNER, HWDSB Staff
