Do you ever wonder where the lakes, cities and even the countries got their names? Have you ever wondered what life was like hundreds of years ago? Well let me tell you about someone who lived a very long time ago and who was very important. Etienne Brule has been believed to be born on March 15 1592 , obviously a very long time ago. His full name was, Etienne Stephen Brule. He was born in France in a place called Champigny very close to Paris. Brule had many friends, to name a few, Samuel de Champlain (also a very famous explorer) Nicholas Marsolet, Gabriel Sagard, and also Jean Nicolet. Brule was 3 years junior to Marsolet, one of his closest European friends. Brule was a friendly young man who was even on the same ship as his good friend (Marsolet) when he arrived at New France in 1608. Since he was so friendly and agreeable he adapted well to the life and the Indians that were there. ![]() While in New France he met up with Champlain and he actually got along with him considering Champlain often complained about Brule. Champlain often chose Brule to travel with him on many of his adventures and when situations seemed "too dicey". He did this because Champlain new that Brule could get out of any possible dilemma. In the year of 1610 Champlain sent Brule on a mission alone to temporarily live with the Algonquin Indians to learn their ways of life then he would report back to Champlain. During that time Brule also explored an area along the Susquehanna River, which is as far as Chesapeake Bay. While there, he found copper mines. When he returned to Champlain he described the things he learned, he also told Champlain about all the copper mines he saw. Champlain then sent him back to learn more and dig in the copper mines. Champlain and Brule were good friends and travelled on the same ship a lot of the time when they went exploring, (the St. Julian). They did many things together including when Champlain and Brule were just relaxing and having a good time when an English fleet came out of nowhere and seized Quebec (which is where they were staying because that is one of the places that Champlain had discovered). Brule being a coward fled Quebec without even helping his good friend. Brule went where he had been before where he knew there were people he could trust. Brule went to live with the Hurons (near lake Huron). In 1630 while still living with the Hurons, they murdered him. The cause is unknown. Even though is still not a well known explorer he did many great things. He discovered copper mines and lived with Indians he even discovered Lake Ontario, Superior, Huron, and Lake Erie these thing all contribute to Canada today. If it wasn't for Brule we would not know so much about these places. I think that he is very important to Canada and that he should not be forgotten. |
